Toyota - Lead the way

The past year we have been busy preparing our Toyota Prado for our adventure. Since we moved to South Africa we've been driving a Prado as it's our favourite car. Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach have always serviced our cars. The Halfway staff is friendly and always prepared to go the extra mile for us. Especially the technicien Ivan Narainsamy is a star! He built in a dual battery system, a compressor, a snorkel, a ARB Sahara bar etc.

We feel priviliged that Halfway Toyota has decided to sponsor us with spares which we can take on our trip. We would like to thank Brian Jones for his generosity!

Gaat dat allemaal op het roofrack???

In de vorige post lieten we al weten dat we druk bezig zijn geweest met het opbouwen en verbeteren van ons roofrack. Een paar weken geleden hebben we bij Howling Moon (de fabrikant van onze rooftop tent) een hele mooie 'Half Moon Awning" gekocht. Wij zijn tot nu toe mooi weer kampeerders, maar we zullen volgend jaar waarschijnlijk ook hele andere weersomstandigheden tegenkomen. En dan is een luifel waarmee we ons leefgebied wat kunnen uitbreiden natuurlijk reuze handig.

En dan kunnen we ook nog de extension onder de luifel ritsen.

Kortom we hebben verschillende mogelijkheden. Heel leuk en aardig, maar waar laten we deze twee pakketten? Het merendeel van de tijd zullen we ze immers niet gebruiken, maar als we ze nodig hebben dan moeten we ze makkelijk kunnen pakken. Co heeft zich sufgepeinsd en heeft uiteindelijk een plan gemaakt.

Het begint met 4 roestvrijstalen plaatjes.

Passen en meten om de plaatjes op de juiste manier op het roofrack te bevestigen.

Stad en land afgelopen om de juiste brackets te vinden.

Het is functioneel, maar nog niet echt mooi.

Co gebruikt DTM, de Zuid Afrikaanse versie van Hammerrite

Even de luifel en de extension oprollen op de lengte van de buis en dan de zelfgemaakte hoezen eromheen 

Op de draaideksels maakt Co beugeltjes, waardoor we ze met een slotje kunnen afsluiten.

Een opbergsysteem in de garage mag natuurlijk ook niet ontbreken.

Co is zo enthousiast over z'n buissysteem, dat hij gelukkig nog een toepassing bedenkt!

"In de hand werken"

Regelmatig krijgen we de vraag waar we momenteel druk mee zijn, onze auto is toch klaar? Zeker! Toch zijn er altijd dingen te bedenken die verbeterd kunnen worden.....

Zo hadden we bijvoorbeeld vrij veel loze ruimten om het drawersystem heen. Het drawersystem is bekleed met vloerbedekking waar klittenband heel goed aan vastkleeft. Dus is Eef achter de naaimachine gaan zitten en heeft allerlei opbergvakken gemaakt.

Made for 50% On-road, 50% Off-road usage, these tires have excellent traction on all types of terrain. As our friends and family know we have traveled a lot in Southern Africa and we prefer to go off road, to remote areas. Paint protection

A lot of our friends already know how enthusiastic we are about VPS "vehicle protection shield". It's a clear, high gloss polyurethane film which is applied to vulnerable areas of our car to protect the paint from being damaged. Especially when we are off road the vehicle easily gets scratched by thorn bushes or damaged by stone chips. After we get home Co will wash the car and apply some wax and the scratches dissapear as snow in the sun!

Pimping up the car

Our friend Pauline McGovern of Car Plates & Signs has helped us pimping up our car. The masterpiece is the map on the bonnet, doesn't it look smart! It's nice to be able to show people on the way where we come from and where we are heading to. We will add our route with little dots, while we are travelling. Car Plates & Signs also printed flags of all the countries we're passing. Every time we cross a border we will stick the flag of that specific country on, next to the map.
